The History

Government land auctions in the mid 1800’s saw farming properties established in East Kew, along the Yarra River. Two of these early properties – ‘Belford’ and ‘Willsmere Estate’ – lent their names to today’s East Kew streets – Belford Road and Willsmere Road.

“Belford” was devastated by floods in 1863 and is today home to the Kew Golf Course.

This history explains why life in East Kew is intrinsically connected to the Yarra River, which marks the north and west boundaries of the suburb. The river’s green wedge spills into East Kew with parks, community gardens and trails throughout the suburb.

Enjoy spectacular views of the river scenery, to the East, North and West, from the 1st floor of Belford Court.
